Payment is the wall most overseas FANZA buyers actually hit. The geo-block on the storefront is solvable with a VPN; the issuer-region check at checkout is harder. This article ranks the four working approaches by observed pass rate and operational friction.

The actual problem

FANZA's checkout sends both the cardholder country (from BIN lookup) and the user's IP to the acquirer. A non-JP card on a JP IP is allowed by FANZA's terms but is frequently declined by the issuer. A non-JP card on a non-JP IP is rejected before the issuer even sees it. The trick is to remove the card-region signal entirely (PayPal / Amazon Pay / DMM Points) or to use a card the issuer is happy to authorize for foreign-currency adult merchants (Taiwanese JCB, sometimes).

PayPal detailed walkthrough

  1. From the FANZA top-up page, choose "Buy DMM Points with PayPal".
  2. Pick your point pack (¥3,000 / ¥5,000 / ¥10,000).
  3. Sign in to PayPal (Taiwan account works).
  4. Choose your funding source. JCB > Visa for pass rate.
  5. Confirm. Points appear in your DMM wallet within seconds.
  6. Go back to the title, choose DMM Points at checkout, complete purchase.

Watch out: PayPal will ask whether to convert to TWD or pay in JPY. Always pay in JPY — PayPal's FX is worse than your card's.

Amazon Pay detailed walkthrough

  1. Make sure you have an Amazon Japan account (different from amazon.com).
  2. Add a card or a Japan address book entry under that account.
  3. At FANZA checkout, choose Amazon Pay.
  4. Authorize. Done.

JCB direct: which cards work

  • 玉山 JCB — best pass rate in our test set.
  • 華南 JCB — middle.
  • 永豐 JCB — middle.
  • Taishin JCB — observed declines.

Enable 3-D Secure / OTP. If your bank forces SMS-based auth, make sure roaming SMS works at checkout time.

DMM prepaid card

Pre-paid card sold in Japanese convenience stores (¥1,000 / ¥3,000 / ¥5,000 / ¥10,000 / ¥20,000 denominations). Bring back from a Japan trip, redeem from anywhere. Shopee resellers exist but apply 20–40% markup. We also intend to operate our own resale page in the future.

BitCash and electronic money

Listed as fallback only. BitCash works but adds a step (you buy BitCash with a card, then use BitCash to buy DMM Points). PayPal accomplishes the same thing in fewer steps.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Visa always fail?
Visa's network has the strictest cross-border adult-merchant rules. Most non-JP issuers will decline FANZA charges by default, and in some cases the rule is enforced at the network level before the issuer sees it.
Will my JCB card eventually work for everything?
No. Pass rate is title-dependent — newer mainstream releases tend to clear, certain niche labels do not. Treat JCB as opportunistic, not primary.
Is DMM Points refundable?
Generally no. Buy small denominations to avoid stranded balance.
