DMM/FANZA blocks new account creation from non-Japan IPs. Existing accounts work fine from anywhere — the wall is at signup. This guide covers three approaches that actually work, ranked by safety and reliability.

Hard prerequisite: a Japan IP, once

You only need a Japan IP for the signup flow itself. After the account is verified and you have logged in once, your subsequent logins from a Taiwan or US IP are treated as "temporary travel" and the account stays usable.

Method 1 — Sign up during a Japan trip (recommended)

Cleanest path. While in Japan: connect to hotel WiFi, register the account, complete email verification, log in once. Take ~10 minutes total.

  • Required: an email address, a password.
  • Optional but recommended: enable 2-factor authentication immediately.
  • Take screenshots of the confirmation email and account-info page for your records.

Method 2 — Sign up via VPN (grey zone)

Works in practice. DMM does not deeply geolocate the signup form beyond IP — a Japanese IP from a residential-style VPN exit is enough to clear it. However, terms of service technically require a Japan address, so this is not strictly compliant. Risks: account flagged later for billing-country mismatch, especially if your eventual payment method clearly originates outside Japan.

If you go this route, choose a VPN with stable Japan exits (see VPN comparison) and complete signup + first purchase entirely on the Japan IP.

Method 3 — Account transfer / proxy creation

Have a Japan-based friend create the account, then hand it over. Simple but ToS-violating; if you trust the person, it works. Do not buy accounts from unknown resellers — frequent fraud and credential reuse.

After signup

  • Enable 2FA in account settings.
  • Complete email verification immediately.
  • Make a small (¥3,000) DMM Points top-up while still on a Japan IP — this "warms" the account in DMM's risk model.
  • Log in from your usual region once before your trip ends, so DMM logs that geography as a known device.

Scenario A: TW IP / JP-PayPal / JP account

This is the ideal post-trip state. PayPal funds the account from a Japan-side relationship; the account itself was registered in Japan; only your viewing IP is Taiwan. Risk score: low. We have not observed friction in this configuration.

Frequently asked questions

What if I cannot travel to Japan?
Method 2 (VPN signup) is the practical fallback. Use a clean Japan exit IP, complete signup and first purchase in one VPN session.
Can I change my registered country later?
DMM does not have a self-service country change for adult accounts. The registered country stays Japan; in practice this never causes issues for streaming, only occasionally for re-verification.
What about DMM email-only sign-in?
DMM offers a passwordless email-link login. This works from any IP after the account exists. We recommend setting an actual password as well.
